Health Initiatives - HI was founded in April 1999, by Clint Walters (then aged 19) as the only HIV peer based Support/Educational and Clinic PALS project in the UK.
"Soon after testing HIV positive in 1997 at the age of 17, I rapidly developed AIDS and spent months in and out of hospital. Positive Youth - the only HIV peer based charity in London - folded the year I was diagnosed. HI was set up 2 years to late for me. After treatments I left the UK and found a whole new life in the USA. Services were targeted through young people's involvement and were accessible over the weekend when most people had 'free time' for school, university and work. HI has now worked in many areas of sexual health across the UK. We are currently developing the UK's ONLY Weekend HIV Testing and Support centre for young people under the age of 27. " Clint
HI's approach to sexual health issues were based on and adapted from the UCSF AIDS Health Project (pictured below with fellow project workers & interns) where he worked with numerous peer-based projects and clinical settings including: Bay Poz, Dimensions Clinic, Health Centre One and Health Initiatives For Youth (HIFY).
